Ruth L. Gottesman Clinical Skills Center - Overview and Services

Completed in the fall of 2009, the Clinical Skills Center (CSC) was designed to meet the educational needs of Einstein’s medical school students as a resource for the teaching and assessment of clinical skills. Throughout their education, physicians-in-training need a safe and supportive environment to learn, practice, and receive feedback on the clinical skills that are essential to the practice of medicine.

The CSC serves as the home for Einstein’s Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) program, the Clinical Skills Assessment program, and the administrative office for the Patients Doctors and Communities (PDC) course. Clinical faculty and administrative personnel support academic programs and facility operations. The CSC offers faculty, students, and colleagues the use of 23 clinical examination rooms, a conference room, a classroom, a patient lounge, and a reception area spread out over two wings and 23,000sq ft. We are located on the second floor of the Van Etten Building, formerly known as the Van Etten Hospital (campus map).

Clinical examination rooms are equipped with a dry erase board, desktop computer, an outpatient exam bed, three massage tables, an examination cart, and four wall-mounted oto/ophthalmoscopes and aneroid blood pressure monitors. Most rooms include sinks and a single-person lavatory with additional bathroom facilities on both of two wings. Of the 23 examination rooms, 10 are equipped with video cameras and microphones, which can be used for digitally recorded patient encounters. The CSC uses SimCapture software for its digital recording and assessment management. Recordings are accessible for students and faculty through our secured network. Faculty has the ability to observe patient encounters in real-time from within our Control Room or directly outside an examination room via one-way mirrored glass panels and wireless headsets connected to our audio system. Clinical examination rooms are also utilized for use for both workshop sessions, small group teaching, and discussion groups of 20-25 people.

The Beren Conference Room and Albrecht Classroom both include desktop computers, A/V projection units, and amplified sound systems. Room capacity can be increased with special requests for room set-up, but typically accommodate 30 people in Beren and 35 in Albrecht. Additional information about some of our academic programs can be found on Einstein's Office of Medical Education website.
